To advance the mission of Araneum: Richmond Undergraduate Journal of American & Global Affairs, the journal will:

  • Publish a minimum of two editions featuring selected articles written by students each year, according to the academic standards of the journal.

  • Establish the reputation of the journal on campus by working with members of the faculty at the University of Richmond to build long-term relationships and in doing so increase outreach to students across the University and the various fields of study represented by the university.

  • Over time extend the reach of the journal to include contributors from other universities.

  • Host events where students can meet members of the journal and learn about the process of submitting articles and getting published.

  • Use the intellectual resources of student contributors to ensure that the highest quality content is presented to the viewing public.

Inspiring the next generation of social scientists.

Araneum: Richmond Undergraduate Journal of American & Global Affairs is the first of its kind at the university. The mission of the journal is twofold: to further academic discourse on politics, both domestic and international, and to encourage students both at the University of Richmond and other universities to publish new and unique articles, supporting them as student authors and the next generation of social scientists.

Araneum: Richmond Undergraduate Journal of American & Global Affairs aspires to uplift student authors through its core values of academic excellence, dedication to continued learning, diversity, and involvement. The pursuit of academic excellence is at the heart of the journal. The journal wants to push students to go beyond typical academic standards to not only further their knowledge, but to further the knowledge of those who read their writing as well. In the pursuit of academic excellence, we encourage not only readers, but ourselves, to further their political awareness, to challenge their pre-concieved notions within this realm, and to push the bounds of the limitless pursuit of knowledge.

The journal celebrates diversity in not only the articles that are published but the students who publish them. The journal aims to draw from the vast pool of student academics, each with their own backgrounds and lived experiences, in order to represent a full breadth of views and positions. No student willing to embrace and uphold the values of this journal, regardless of class, race, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, or creed, should be excluded from furthering their learning through participation in this organization. The social sciences are not monolithic, nor should we be. The University of Richmond Undergraduate Journal of Politics is not just a journal or organization, but a community created by the students for the benefit of the students.
